KT5 Knowledge Assessments
Before you can complete your Heavy Combination on-road assessment, you must first pass the KT5 VicRoads Knowledge Test.

Next Steps
You’re getting closer. The VicRoads Knowledge Test is a formal road safety assessment, and it is completely normal not to pass on the first attempt.
What matters now is reviewing the correct material and choosing the next session format that suits you best.
Written or Verbal
You can rebook a written session, or choose a Verbal Assessment where the questions are read aloud by an instructor.
The same VicRoads pass mark applies to both formats.
Important Study Reminder
Before your next session, please review the Victorian Bus and Truck Drivers’ Handbook, the official VicRoads study guide for both KT4 and KT5.
The Knowledge Test is based entirely on this handbook.

Printed copies are also available at any VicRoads branch or through our office.

Sessions are available throughout the week at no additional charge.

Knowledge Test Session — FAQ
Heavy Vehicle Licence Assessments — VicRoads Knowledge Tests (KT4 & KT5)
About the Knowledge Test
What is a Knowledge Test Session?
A Knowledge Test Session is a dedicated session where you sit your required VicRoads Knowledge Test before proceeding to your on-road heavy vehicle assessment.
Which test will I sit?
This depends on the licence class you are working towards:
• KT4 — Heavy Rigid (LR to HR): 32 questions, pass mark 26 out of 32
• KT5 — Heavy Combination (HC): 20 questions, pass mark 16 out of 20
How do I prepare?
Study the Victorian Bus and Truck Drivers’ Handbook, which is the official VicRoads reference for both the KT4 and KT5. It covers vehicle inspections, vehicle control, road rules, and trailer use. Copies are available through VicRoads.
For participants completing the KT5, we also recommend studying our HC-MC Learner Guide, which is included in your course instructions email.
Attempts & Sessions
How many attempts do I get?
You have 2 attempts per day. Each attempt is a different set of questions.
Can I attend more than one Knowledge Test Session per day?
No. Only one Knowledge Test Session is permitted per day. If you do not pass in your session, you will need to rebook and attend on a different day.
What happens if I do not pass both attempts?
If both attempts are unsuccessful, your session ends for that day. You will need to rebook a new Knowledge Test Session on a separate day before your on-road assessment can proceed.
Can I attend multiple Knowledge Test Sessions on different days?
Yes. You can rebook and attend as many sessions as needed, on separate days, until you pass.
How long is my result valid for?
A passed Knowledge Test result is valid for 12 months. If you do not complete your practical assessments within that period, you will need to resit the Knowledge Test.
Booking
How do I book a Knowledge Test Session?
You can book online or by contacting our customer service team.
Cost & Assessment Options
Is there a cost to sit the Knowledge Test?
There is no additional charge to sit the Knowledge Test as part of your course. If a Verbal Assessment is required, a fee of $100 applies.
What is a Verbal Assessment?
A Verbal Assessment means the test questions will be read aloud to you by an instructor. Please note, the instructor is not able to provide any assistance, guidance, or help with answering the questions — you are still required to answer all questions independently. This option is available if you have difficulty reading the written test. A fee of $100 applies and must be paid at the time of booking. Please request this option when booking.
What if I need an interpreter?
Interpreter support is arranged separately from the Verbal Assessment. If you require an interpreter, please contact our customer service team directly so we can assist you.
Please note that interpreters must be organised through a VicRoads-approved service, so let us know at the time of booking, as prior arrangements need to be made.
